The Centre for Fine Woodworking, Nelson, New Zealand

The Centre for Fine Woodworking is a charitable educational trust with the principal aim of offering high quality tuition in fine woodworking.

Nelson, where the school is based, provides an attractive and stimulating environment centred around its exceptional climate, landscape and creative and artistic community.

The Centre offers courses with small class sizes and a low student to instructor ratio.

Fundamental to the Centre’s philosophy is accessibility for all students.

Our programme is designed in such a way that students can choose to enrol for short/weekend workshops, individual courses to learn a specific skill, or the full time furniture makers course.

Courses and tuition in fine woodworking and classic chair making

Some highlights:

  • Beginning Cabinet Making Course – our most popular course. A two week intensive introduction for all aspiring woodworkers - this course is scheduled three times each year and will give the experience and prerequisite for other advanced courses in our programme.

  • Beginning Cabinet Making Courses 2 & 3 – new and exciting additions to our course programme - two course options for those who have previously attended Beginning Cabinet Making and want to come back for more.

  • The full time Furniture Makers Course – ten months in duration, split into three modules specifically designed to give a comprehensive learning experience through immersion in fine woodworking and furniture making.

  • A series of individual courses of between two and twelve weeks offering specific learning opportunities such as dovetailing, veneering and chair making. Students can progressively attend all of these (to complete the full time furniture making course) or undertake individual courses of particular interest as it suits.

  • Short courses covering a wide variety of topics and projects such as routers and planemaking.

We welcome enquiries from absolute beginners, amateur and practising woodworkers, teachers seeking a sabbatical, or students from design school wishing to compliment and develop their training further.

We offer courses that are consistent with and inclusive of the needs of a broad variety of students. We can develop and tailor courses to meet a particular student's needs and time scale. If you are not sure which course will best suit your needs or would like to discuss how your time with us can be best utilised then you are most welcome to phone or email us.

Completed work from all courses is eligible for inclusion in the Centre for Fine Woodworking's annual exhibition here in Nelson over the summer.

Enrolments are confirmed on receipt of the deposit. Full payment of individual modules 30 days prior to the start of the first course will attract a discount, and full payment of the full time furniture makers course 30 days prior to the start of the course will attract a further discount - information available on request.

Course fees at the Centre for Fine Woodworking have always included GST and we made a commitment to not increase fees for 2011. However, due to the increase in GST from 12.5% to 15% which will take effect from 1st October 2010 we have had to adjust our fees to include this. For any 2011 courses that are paid in full before 1st October 2010 we will apply the lower GST price

Current full time student Mia Trew details her experiences at the Centre for Fine Woodworking in her blog.
