    Students will learn:

  • sharpening and tuning of the woodworker's fundamental hand tool kit, i.e. planes, chisels, saws, marking gauges, marking knifes, spokeshaves and scrapers.
  • to prepare stock so that it is straight, flat, and square, using planes, winding sticks, gauges, calipers and squares.
  • to accurately mark out work using rulers, squares, gauges, knives, and bevels.
  • to accurately cut and fit joints using saws, chisels and planes.
  • to clean-up and finish work using simple materials such as shellac, waxes and oils.
  • Students develop fundamental bench logic and working processes throughout this period.

During the latter part of the course, machine tools will be introduced and students will learn to use bandsaws, jointers, thicknessers, tablesaws and routers safely.
