You will experience visting a timber yard, selecting timber with good form and figure to suit the project, and machining timber from its raw state to useable stock. You will make a simple full scale drawing and extract a cutting list. Techniques covered will include dovetailing, drawmaking, fitting of shelves and carcase, coopering, scraping, cleaning up, finishing techniques, and fitting of hinges and handle. "The Jewellery Box – A box with a tray, a hinged top and a handle" designed by Vic Matthews will lead students into a fascinating area of fine woodworking, this course aims to introduce the principles behind working small and fine with the emphasis strongly on technique. Participants will be led step by step through a set jewellery box project.

Vic says "All my boxes are generally constructed with fine through dovetails with mitred corners. I either have lids which are sawn off after the boxes are glued up – the top generally an overlaid floating panel – and hinged with small butt hinges, or a lid which is a flat frame and panel hinged with two sprung brass rods, which I make myself – rather like the method of attaching watch straps."

This compact two week course will allow students to revisit and develop further the bench skills gained in beginning cabinetmaking and take home a worthwhile and appreciated piece of work.

Please note that Beginning Cabinet Making 2 and Beginning Cabinet Making 3 offer a choice for students as both courses are offered as a follow on from Beginning Cabinet Making 1.
