Length: 5 days
Dates: 10-14 March
Fee: $750 including GST
Non-refundable deposit: $300
Prerequisite: none This is an opportunity for up to 10 students to spend a week under the
guidance of NZ's foremost authority on antique furniture restoration.
William Cottrell combines the analytical and writing skills of a research
historian with the practical skills of a highly experienced and regarded
restoration and conservation expert, and first class woodworker. His recent
book, 'Furniture of the New Zealand Colonial Era' won two major awards
upon publication, and has become the classic reference-work on the subject.
Much more than just a hands-on course, students will be guided through
the many issues, both ethical and practical, that may confront the serious
conservator and restorer. Issues as diverse as authenticity, recognising
period styles, features and materials, constructional details and problems
as well as necessary tools techniques and finishing choices will all be
covered, along with hands-on examples of pieces for restoration.
