Module Three fulfills a critical role within the structure of our full time course. During this period the move to independence as designer/maker intensifies for our students. Usually student needs at this stage are highly individual so instructors work specifically with each person to map out their pathway over the term.
Participants can develop their own projects using woodworking skills and ability with the design process previously developed in Module 1& 2, identify major areas of skill they would like to further develop and with tutor support undertake set projects to enable this or transition from one to the other approach. Appropriate choices here are based on maximising student ability and personal preference. Access to support is key here as students undertake and continue through this process and tutors are always present to offer insight, advice and demonstration.
Motivation as well as highly appropriate learning is provided by the setting up and opening of our annual exhibition in the final week of the module. The focus of the exhibition also instigates a further increase in intensity in the workshop bringing the pace of work to a professional level. The potential for up to three learning groups to be working alongside each other in the greater workshop environment during this period further adds to the stimulating and motivating environment.
For woodworkers looking for short term informal tutoring in any area the flexible approach to student learning during this module provides the perfect opportunity and we welcome enquiries on this basis.
During this module the issues surrounding establishing a fine woodworking business will be explored in a seminar presented by Glen McNeilly a fine woodworker whose previous life was as an accountant. He will be supported by a group of succesful practising woodworkers providing insights into their business strategy. Visits by successful craftspeople/mentors from fine woodworking and other fields are also planned to stimulate dicussion about the realities of being a designer/maker.
